My husband had been to Tioman with friends years ago and he has always told me how beautiful it was and that he wanted to take me there one day. That day finally arrived last month. After booking our bus from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing, our ferry from Mersing to Tioman and, lastly, our Tioman hotel, we were set for our Tioman trip.
Incidentally, I was reminded of how blessed we are to live in this day and age, because my husband quipped how easy it was nowadays to book a get-away holiday, even to a remote bounty island such as Tioman; when he first went to Tioman, everything had to be booked by travel agent, a process that took almost a week.
Hurray for internet.
Our bus ride took us through interesting landscapes and, in part thanks to the stops we had a long the way, it was actually quite enjoyable, particularly the food stops at the road-side eateries that served authentic Malay meals and fresh fruit.
When we arrived in Mersing, our ferry was ready to depart, which we'd arranged in advance by buying our ferry tickets here. Within minutes, we were motoring towards our paradise island, Tioman.
Within an hour, Tioman's famous dragon profile was discernible at the horizon through the ferry window, as if featuring in a movie scene. Even from a distance, the emerald forest and aquamarine sea stood out clearly. What a stunning little jewel Tioman is.
After disembarking from the ferry and making our way across the jetty, we were met by the private Berjaya shuttle, which took us - convenience FTW! - to the Berjaya reception, about a 10 minute drive through a Tioman kampong and a road carved out of the jungle.
Well, in a nutshell, our Tioman getaway can only be described as sheer heaven. The stunning sceneries Tioman offers, both above and below the waterline, have to be seen to be believed. It's amazing that such an idyllic place can be so close to cities like KL and Singapore. We've been to Maldives and Mauritius, but Tioman is at least on a par with the islands there.
And let's not forget the full range of facilities and amenities available at Berjaya, as well as the various recreational activities on offer at Berjaya. We went kayaking, snorkeling, jungle-hiking, saw the Tioman waterfalls, chameleons and even a budding Rafflesia, the world's biggest flower!
At the end of the day, it's safe to say that Tioman Island truly is all that it's cracked up to be. And then some.
Lastly, a few notes. If you want to book the Tioman Berjaya Resort and Spa, you can do that here.
Also, the bus, or coach, to Mersing can be booked below. You'll find that buses from pretty much everywhere in Singapore, Malaysia and even Thailand have Mersing in their route. Just amend the dropdowns to your choice and away you go.
